CONNECTING TO A SERVER

Before you can start to transfer files you need to establish a connection to the remote server.

If your computer is set to autodial when Internet communications are initiated then you will be prompted to connect to the Internet automatically when required. If not then you must first dial the Internet using Dial-Up Networking which can be found by double clicking My Computer... on the desktop then double clicking the Dial-Up Networking... Icon to display a list of accounts. Double click on the account that you want to use.

Connecting to a New Server

To connect to a server for the first time select Server... New Connection... from the menu to open the New Connection Dialog.

You will need to enter:

  • the server address
  • your username
  • your password

Some FTP Servers will allow public access using the anonymous login, i.e. without specifying a username and password, to do this you can check the Login anonymously option. However

if you are uploading a website then you will always need to enter a username and password. If you do not have these details then you will need to contact your ISP or the company that hosts your website.

Once the details have been entered click the Connect button to connect to the Server.

Connecting to a Server Previously Visited

If you have already made a connection to the server in the past and have saved the connection information in a Server Site Map you can open the site by selecting Server... Open... from the menu and then selecting the site you require.
