Can I Connect through a Firewall
Yes - select View...System Options and select the Proxy tab. Half way down the page on the right hand side you will see a check box headed 'Use Passive Data Connections (PASV). Check the box and then click on Apply and OK.
Normally data transfer connections (i.e. when files are to be transferred etc.) are made by the FTP server connecting to your computer. Your firewall will block these connections. The PASV setting will notify the FTP server that all data transfer connections are to be made from your computer to the FTP server.

Terrapin is hanging on 'Refreshing Folder' or 'Waiting Acknowledgement'
Terrapin FTP appears to hang as it is waiting for data to be returned by the server and for some reason the server is unable to connect to your computer and send the data. The most common reason for this is that you have a firewall on your computer blocking incoming connections.
To solve the problem you need to select View...System Options and select the Proxy tab. Half way down the page on the right hand side you will see a check box headed 'Use Passive Data Connections (PASV). Check the box and then click on Apply and OK. The PASV setting will notify the FTP server that all data transfer connections are to be made from your computer to the FTP server.

All I get when I visit my website is a list of files
Whenever someone visits your website the server has to decide which file to display first. If there is a file called 'index.htm' or 'index.html' then it will display this file first. If it cannot find a file by this name then it displays a list of files. To solve your problem you will have to rename your first page 'index.htm' or 'index.html' and re-upload your website.
If you used a web-authoring package to create your site then you will need to use the same package to rename your first page 'index.htm' or 'index.html'. This will prevent the links within your other pages from becoming invalid.
Note that with some FTP servers you can use 'default.htm' as your first page.

My ISP's default page is still being shown when I visit my website
When you registered with your ISP, they will have placed a standard default page called 'index.htm' on your website. You need to delete this page. To do this connect to your website using Terrapin. Click on the root folder in the upper left white box (headed FTP Site). Scroll down the list of files on the upper right white box until you find the file called 'index.htm'. Click on the 'index.htm' file and select File....Delete from the main menu.
You now need to rename the first page of your website 'index.htm' so that it is automatically displayed first when someone visits your website.

I have updated my website, but the old site is still displayed
Your web browser may be displaying your website from memory instead of from the Internet. To ensure that your web browser connects to the Internet and displays the latest version click on the Refresh button on the main menu within your web browser (may be called Reload).
If this does not cure the problem then check the following:
- If you have more than one website then check that you are uploading to the correct one. Within Terrapin right click on the FTP server icon in the upper left white box (headed FTP Site) then select Properties.....Connection. Check that the user name is for the webspace that you are trying to upload to. If it is not then make a new connection and try again.
- Check that you have updated any pages that link to your new pages and upload these as well.
- Check that the file names of the new pages are exactly the same as the old pages that they are replacing - web servers are nearly always case sensitive so check case.
- If you have a domain name pointing to your website then check your website without going through your domain name by using the direct URL. If your website is fine when you go directly but not when you use your domain name then there is a problem with your domain name hosting.

The images on my site are not being displayed
Check the following:
- Make sure that the image files are present on your website by finding them in the upper white box within Terrapin. If they are not there then you need to upload them again.
- Check that the file names of the images in the upper right white box (i.e. on the FTP server) are the same (including the case) as the file names of the image files in the bottom right white box (i.e. on your computer).
- If your image files are in a subfolder on your computer, then check that they are in a subfolder with exactly the same name on the FTP server.
- Double click your index file on your computer (bottom right white box) and check that the images are displaying there. If not then right click on the index file and select Check Links. Re-upload your website.

Can I maintain more than one site using Terrapin FTP
Yes - Terrapin FTP can be used to maintain any number of sites.
The default within Terrapin is to save your FTP connection details using FTP server address. You can then connect to any of your websites by selecting Sever....Open and selecting the appropriate one from the list displayed.
If you have more than one account with the same ISP then the FTP server address will be the same for each account. To make sure that you can distinguish between your websites and always upload to the correct one make a new connection to one of your websites. Once connected select Sever...Save AS from the main menu and choose an appropriate name for the connection details of that website. Then make new connections to all your websites and do the same for each one.

When I try to delete a file the server tells me that it cannot be found
The most likely reason for this message is that you are viewing a site map that is out of date. To make sure that you are looking at the current position on the server click on the root folder of your site in the upper left white box. Select Folder...Refresh SubFolders from the main menu. The 'Refresh Subfolders' window will pop up - enable the option to 'Refresh All Levels'.
If you get the error message that you do not have permission then click on the subfolder that contains your website (sometimes called 'pub' or 'public') and go through the above process with that subfolder.
You may find that once you have refreshed the folders that the file you are trying to delete is no longer there.
If you are still having problems then it is possible that the file that you are trying to delete has a name that the server does not like. You will have to rename the file before deleting it. To do this click on the file in the upper right white box. Select File...Rename File from the main menu. Enter a simple name such as 'test'. Make sure that there are no spaces at the beginning of the file name.
Once the file has been renamed you should be able to delete it from your site.

How do I download my entire site
Within Terrapin connect to your website and click on the root folder on the upper left white box (headed FTP Site) that contains your website. Why do some of my files have a different size after they are transferred to my website
Whenever a file is transferred in ASCII (text) format the server removes certain characters form its contents. ASCII format is required for textual files (e.g. HTM, HTML, CGI and TXT files).

How do Domain Names work
If you wish to obtain your own domain name then you will need to purchase it from a domain name company. More information on domain names can be obtained from the Internet.
If you purchase a domain name and some web space from the same company, then you will need to upload your web files directly to your domain name company's server. They will provide you with the details that you need in order for a connection to your site to be made.
If you have purchased a domain name only then you will need to set up a 'Domain Name Forwarding' service. This service will redirect any hits on your domain address onto another website address of your choice. You will need to contact the company that sold you your domain name and they will be able to configure this service for you.

Does Terrapin FTP support FrontPage Extensions
FrontPage extension support depends on the server that you are uploading to not on Terrapin FTP.
Most servers do not support FrontPage extensions, however they will probably offer server specific extensions that will allow the same functionality to be achieved. You will need to contact the company/ISP that hosts your website. Further information can often be found on their own website.
