1. Concepts

A MultiNet enabled network comprises:

  1. A MultiNet Server
  2. MultiNet Enabled Workstations
  3. Any number of optional Administration clients.

The MultiNet Server is the gateway between computers on your network and the Internet. Typically only one MultiNet server is required on your network and it can be located on any computer that you nominate. The server does not need dedicated hardware and can be used for other purposes. However, this computer must have a connection to the Internet. The connection may be via a modem, ISDN/ADSL adapter or a router.

Every other computer on your network 'talks' to the MultiNet server when exchanging email or accessing the Internet. The choice of client software is yours and any Internet aware email client and web browser can be used. The MultiNet installation utility helps you enable your workstations by setting up the correct networking protocols, and configuring common email clients and web browsers.

MultiNet can be managed from any computer on your network through an Administration Client. The Administration Client allows you to setup new users, control your users' access to the Internet as well as set any of the MultiNet configuration information. Note that an Administration Client is automatically installed on the server computer and it is not essential to install the client on any other computer.

The MultiNet installation utility will install each of the above network components. It will validate the configuration of any computer that it is run on, It will install any missing Windows components and solve most TCP/IP networking issues.

On Windows 95, 98 and ME the MultiNet installation utility can be run without any preparation of the machine. On Windows NT, 2000 and XP you should ensure that:

  • TCP/IP has been installed (but not necessarily configured)
  • NT Service Pack 3 or higher has been installed (NT only)
  • You are logged in with administration privileges

2. Installing the MultiNet Server

The MultiNet Server should be installed before any other network component is configured. The server installation will:

  • install TCP/IP (if required)
  • install a modem or ISDN adapter (if required)
  • install Remote Access Services (if required)
  • configure TCP/IP (if required)
  • setup a dialup connection to your ISP (if required)
  • install the MultiNet server software
  • optionally install Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express (CD distribution only)
  • configure Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to use the MultiNet server

3. MultiNet Enabled Workstations

The MultiNet installation utility can be used to help you configure the workstations on your network. Although it is not mandatory to run the installation utility on each client computer it can assist in resolving the most common networking issues. The workstation installation will:

  • validate the TCP/IP configuration and install / setup missing components
  • detect the MultiNet server on your network and ensure that the IP address of the client machine is consistent with that of the server
  • ensure that DHCP is working correctly with the Network adapter and if necessary obtain a permanent IP address for the client computer
  • setup a new user on the MultiNet server
  • optionally install Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express (CD distribution only)
  • configure Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to use the MultiNet server

4. Installing Optional Administration Clients

An Administration client can be installed on any computer from which you require access to MutliNet configuration settings.

The Administration client installation performs similar network validation tasks as the Workstation installation, however, it will not install or configure Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.
