Port Mapper

The port mapping services enables MultiNet to 'mirror' services provided by other computers on the Internet or LAN. A port on the MultiNet server is 'mapped' to a port on another device. Traffic from client software connected to the MultiNet port is tunnelled through MultiNet and passed to the mapped device.

The mapped device sees MultiNet as the client. The client software sees MultiNet as the server.

A key use of the port mapping service is to enable client software which is not proxy aware (a news client say) to securely access Internet servers (an NNTP server say) without introducing a security risk.

By default, access to MultiNet ports is restricted to computers on the local network. It is possible to lift these restrictions for particular ports to enable access from one or more computers on the Internet. This method can be used to establish a tunnel through the firewall to enable a trusted server on the local network to provided Internet services.
