Gateway Concepts

Terrapin MultiNet acts as a mediator between the Internet and client computers.

User agents (web browser, email client etc.) on client computers connect to the MultiNet server and issue a request. The MultiNet server interprets the request and either serves the resource itself or connects to the Internet and obtains the resource on the clients behalf. The user is in most cases unaware that MultiNet is acting as a an intermediary in the transaction.

The gateway computer is the computer which hosts the MultiNet 'server'. The terminology 'Server' is used for conceptual purposes only. Any computer on the network that meets the minimum specifications is acceptable. The gateway computer does NOT need to act as a file server or network authentication server.

MultiNet can manage multiple concurrent connections and many users can access the Internet simultaneously. In environments where the gateway dials a connection to the Internet, MultiNet will automatically manage the dial-up connection and disconnection.
