Web Proxy Server Concepts

The MultiNet Web Proxy enables any user on the internal network to have access to the World Wide Web. The Web Proxy service supports all popular Internet protocols including: Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP), Gopher, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and HTTPS for secure sessions.

The Web Proxy provides the following features:

  • Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP) version 1.1 support. HTTP 1.1 is fully supported which enables MultiNet Web Proxy to deliver significant gains in performance. MultiNet independently manages different versions of protocols on client and server sides and optimises protocol usage based on client and server capabilities.
  • user level security for web access. Access to web content is determined at the administrator level on a user by user basis. The Web Proxy provides secure password protected login.
  • HTTP object caching and BTREE cache index management. Copies of Internet resources are stored in the Web Proxy dedicated cache. Subsequent requests for these objects can be serviced from the cache without requiring the request to be issued over the Internet. Utilising the cache greatly improves client browser performance, decreases user response time, and reduces bandwidth consumption on your Internet connection. Speed is further enhanced by the BTREE index cache manager. With 2 billion cached items the cache manager will serve the requested resource only requiring a maximum of 32 hits.
  • restricted access to Internet sites and content filtering. You can restrict access to remote Web sites by IP address, domain name, web address and parts of web addresses. Web content can be checked against system defined dictionaries for specified material. The settings are global and affect all users who access the Internet through the Web Proxy.
  • logged information about Internet requests made by clients. Administrator defined logging options enable full or partial logging of resources accessed on the Internet. Logs identify the resource, date and time of access and the user requesting the resource.
